There’s a new unified heavyweight champion in boxing, and his name is Oleksandr Usyk.
The former unified cruiserweight champion took the WBA, WBO, and IBF titles off of Anthony Joshua (24-2, 22 KOs) by unanimous decision (117-112, 116-112, 115-113) in a thrilling bout at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It’s Joshua’s first loss in front of his home fans and for Usyk it’s just another day at the office as far as winning titles on the road.
Usyk largely outboxed Joshua and hurt him several times while also demonstrating an exemplary chin even when Joshua did land. They both got in some good body work and fought at an exceptional pace for heavyweights. In the end though Joshua was nearly out on his feet with a damaged right eye, and Usyk was a deserved winner.
