Anthony Johnson would like to get right back into the thick of things in the light heavyweight race.
But the problem for “Rumble” at the moment is that there just isn’t an opponent that makes sense.
Johnson (19-5), whose third-round submission loss to Daniel Cormier in the match to fill the vacant 205-pound title at UFC 187 snapped a nine-fight win streak, wants to return to action as soon as August, MMAFighting.com‘s Ariel Helwani reported on Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight.
As of now, though, there’s no opening that seems to be the right fit. Johnson’s last two opponents, Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson, are expected to fight one another. His Blackzilians teammate, Rashad Evans, appears to be destined for a fight with Ryan Bader. Ovince St. Preux and Glover Teixeira are facing off on Aug. 8. Another prospective foe, Jimi Manuwa, is out awhile after hand surgery.
So it appears Rumble’s best bet is to stay in shape and see if the opportunity to step in arises, or else he may not get his August wish.
