Ben Askren isn’t sure Jorge Masvidal’s next fight will be for UFC gold.

Askren, who lost to Masvidal via five-second knockout at UFC 239 on Saturday in Las Vegas, said he expects the UFC to “weigh their options” before deciding who will be next for welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. In other words, in the eyes of Askren, “Gamebred” doesn’t have a title shot locked up just yet.

“It doesn’t appear — and I haven’t looked a lot into it — but it doesn’t appear they’re going to give him the shot,” Askren told Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “That’s probably due to him failing to show up for media day; it’s probably precarious for them to throw him into a title shot and not know if he’s going to show up to promote the title shot.”

Askren said before UFC 239 that he believed his fight with Masvidal was a title eliminator, but only for himself. Following the event, Askren’s opinion on that has seemingly remained the same.

Askren said the promotion will likely wait for Colby Covington vs. Robbie Lawler and Rafael dos Anjos vs. Leon Edwards to happen before booking Usman’s first title defense. Usman, who won the belt in March, is currently recovering from multiple injuries.

“Maybe they’re going to wait and see what happens with Colby and Robbie. Tyron is still kind of a wild card, because he hasn’t accepted a fight yet,” Askren said.

“I think I heard somewhere that they said Usman wasn’t healthy yet or something, but that’s probably an excuse for them saying they don’t really want to give Masvidal the shot.”

Askren said the fact that UFC president Dana White didn’t immediately announce or reveal plans for a Masvidal title shot is a major hint Masvidal won’t be next for Usman.

“They didn’t say, ‘You’re getting a title shot, Jorge,’ and he won in about as spectacular fashion as you could win,” Askren said. “Could he really have won in any more spectacular fashion? Could he have won in any way that gave him more publicity? No. I saw one video of myself getting knocked out on Twitter, it had 7 million views. Brutal.”
