Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s Featherweight champion Cris Cyborg got back into the win column last Saturday night (July 27, 2019) at UFC 240, defeating Felicia Spencer in the co-main event of the pay-per-view (PPV) card in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (highlights).
Afterward, the fearsome striker took it upon herself to wait around for Dana White to finish up an interview to have a little chat. To start things off (beginning at the 12:37 mark in the video above), Cyborg and White shook hands and the UFC president congratulated her on the big win. Meanwhile, Cyborg proudly showed off her first-ever stitch after getting shut down for a performance bonus.
It was then that Cyborg took the chance to confront White about what she says are lies he has been telling the media about not wanting to rematch 145-pound women’s champion, Amanda Nunes.
“You know I text you for the rematch. You know this. Stop lying about it,” Cyborg said. “What you are saying that I don’t want to fight? You know that I want to fight and I’m not scared,” she added before Dana offered up his rebuttal.
“I’m not lying about it. I don’t know if you know how it played out with management and whatever but we want to do that fight. I want to do that fight right now. We’ll get it done.”
From there, White appears to explain the reason(s) he says the things he does to promote a fight before the audio and video cuts out.
While it’s good to see Cyborg and White actually have a face-to-face talk in an attempt to hash out their issues, the ex-champion did go on record to say that she will not re-up with the promotion unless White issues a public apology to her for everything disrespectful she feels he’s said about her to date.
Hey, if White and Ben Askren can bury the hatchet, I’m sure these two can forge a declaration of peace. Nonetheless, it will now be a waiting game to see if Cyborg can come to terms with UFC on a new extension, take a one-fight deal to face Nunes or sign with a rival promotion altogether.
