Paul Bamba dropped a unanimous decision to Chris Avila on the Misfits Boxing fight card back in April 2023. More than a year later, the Puerto Rican pugilist would reveal health complications that may have contributed to his untimely passing.
“Fighting Avila with a concussion and losing 22 pounds in three days gave me slight brain damage,” Bamba wrote on Twitter. “Which was a bit scary and I had to take eight months off, so it’s not a joking matter.”
Bamba died at the age of 35 a month after his startling revelation.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives,” his handlers posted on Instagram. “He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything, he was a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination. We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief.”
Bamba (19-3, 18 KOs) captured the WBA Gold cruiserweight title back on Dec. 21.
Prior to his passing, Bamba set a new world record — previously held by “Iron” Mike Tyson — by competing 14 times in 2024 with 14 knockout victories. Fans on social media were quick to blast Bamba’s management, as well as the local athletic commissions, for supporting such a grueling schedule.
“This year I set out with a goal. I did just that!” Bamba wrote after his final bout. “Wasn’t easy, there were many obstacles that I adapted to overcame and kept on the path we set regardless of extenuating circumstances. 14 fights, 14 knockouts ending with the WBA GOLD cruiserweight world title. Blessed to have my family my team and all my supporters along the way. That being said if you got what some might call an ‘outlandish goal’ GO chase it. Anyone who thinks that isn’t as brave as you, prove people wrong!”
A cause of death has yet to be revealed.
