Bellator’s Daniel Weichel is making his mark in the “toughest tournament in sports.” The 29-year old German fighter won his third fight of 2014 Friday night with a dominant showing against Desmond Green to win Bellator’s season 10 featherweight tournament.
After a game first round where the former Shooto/M-1 fighter traded shots with the New Yorker Green (11-3), Weichel (34-8) was able to sink a rear naked choke midway through the second round at the Casino Rama in Orillia, Ontario.
The veteran Weichel signed with Bellator in September 2013, and now is in line to fight for the featherweight title.
Weichel navigated the featherweight field by Scott Cleve at Bellator 110 in February, and then Connecticut fighter Matt Bassette in the semifinals at Bellator 114. Green beat Mike Richman and Will Martinez to land in the finals.
In earlier action, Marius Zaromskis was able to use his full arsenal of striking to keep Vaughn Anderson at bay, scoring a one-sided unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27). The 33-year old Lithuanian fighter Zaromskis snapped a two-fight losing streak, and improved his overall Bellator record to 4-2 (20-8-1 overall).
Meanwhile Marlon Sandro (25-5-1) defeated Canadian Chris Horodecki (20-5-1) in a lightweight fight via unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 on the scorecards.
