Main Card
(Spike TV, 9 p.m. ET)
Joe Warren vs. Darrion Caldwell
R1: Caldwell snatches up an immediate single leg and finishes it easily. Warren scrambles back to his feet and Caldwell goes to the rear waist cinch, putting Warren on the cage and landing knees to the thighs. Caldwell drags Warren down from the rear waist lock and fires a volley of hard lefts to the head. Short uppercut elbows now from Caldwell as Warren turtles and fights for wrist control. A knee to the ribs of Warren from Caldwell in the back ride.
Warren stands and heaves a back elbow over his shoulder but Caldwell launches him with a belly-to-back suplex. Caldwell sinks in one hook as Warren turtles and threads his arm under the chin, ratcheting a tight rear-naked choke. Warren goes out.
- Darrion Caldwell defeats Joe Warren by submission (rear-naked choke) R1 3:23
Gilbert Smith vs. Fernando Gonzalez
R1: Gonzalez glances with a sweeping hook that lands to the top of Smith’s head and knocks him off balance. Smith fires back, then ducks under the next flurry of Gonzalez to complete a double leg. Smith lands short rights to the head of Gonzalez, then falls back into a sacrifice guillotine. It’s tight but Gonzalez fights to his feet to land a counter high-crotch takedown, and it breaks the hold. Smith gets to his knees and Gonzalez throws a big knee to his head; Smith turtles and goes for a counter double leg.
Gonzalez peels his hips back and sprawls out and lands left hands to he head, forcing Smith into the turtle position. Gonzalez counters with the front headlock, then goes for his own sacrifice guillotine. Gonzalez closes his guard and wrenches the hold, then uses it to sweep into top position. Smith goes for another counter double, finishing it and pinching the knees of Gonzalez together to thwart the escape. 10-10.
R2: Smith has a big left high kick blocked. Smith glances with an uppercut and Gonzalez lands a wide hook with his forearm. Smith keeps leather in his face but Gonzalez shells on most of the blows. Smith shoots deep for a double leg and gets it. Gonzalez sits up on the fence as Smith triangles his legs to lock down those of Gonzalez. Short punches to the head from Smith.
Gonzalez gets wrist and head control to stifle the punches and Smith goes to a cradle. Gonzalez powers out and reverses position, landing on top. Smith shifts the momentum with a counter double leg, again pinching the knees of Gonzalez together to prevent the escape. They’re stood up with 15 seconds left and end the round trading. 10-9 Smith.
R3: Gonzalez sprawls on a double leg and lands short shots to the head. Smith resets and tags Gonzalez with a left-right combo, then finishes another double leg. We’re back to Gonzalez sitting up on the fence with Smith pinching his knees together. Gonzalez explodes out and reverses Smith, getting far-side wrist control and grape-vining a leg as Smith turtles.
Smith breaks free and knifes into range, throwing punches to set up a takedown attempt, and Gonzalez almost acquiesces to the double leg. Gonzalez gets up quicker this time, again powering off the cage and reversing Smith. Gonzalez in side control; Smith hooks in a leg to get half guard. Smith gets full guard but endures some strikes from Gonzalez on top. Smith turtles and shakes out of the waist lock to separate, and they end the round exchanging punches and kicks. 10-9 Gonzalez. I have it a 29-29 draw.
- Fernando Gonzalez defeats Gilbert Smith by split decision (28-29, 29-28 x2)
Goiti Yamauchi vs. Bubba Jenkins
R1: Jenkins lands a light outside low kick. Jenkins forces a clinch but backs off after Yamauchi counters with a single leg. Yamauchi catches a side kick and Jenkins, showing uncanny balance, resists the takedown while frozen in high kick position. Yamauchi ends the stalemate by hopping onto Jenkins’ back and quickly putting both hooks in. Short lefts to the head of Jenkins, who’s stooped over to deal his Japanese-Brazilian backpack.
Yamauchi continues to alternate between pestering with short lefts and rear-naked choke attempts. Standing body triangle now for Yamauchi, staying patient from back control. Yamauchi persists with choke attempts but he can’t get under the chin; still, Jenkins is forced to solely defend for more than half the round. 10-8 Yamauchi.
R2: Hard kicks from Yamauchi to start the second. Jenkins answers with a pair of low kicks and a blast double leg. One butterfly hook from Yamauchi in guard with his head against the fence. Yamauchi puts Jenkins’ head in his armpit and leans over to secure the two-on-one kimura position. Jenkins can only muster ineffective hammer-fists as Yamauchi calmly threatens with the kimura
Now Jenkins starts to get Yamauchi’s attention with heavier hammer-fists and elbows, forcing him to bail on the sub and cover up. Jenkins passes to half; Yamauchi regains full guard and flows from an armbar attempt into a loose triangle. Jenkins postures up and again pounds his way out of the submission attempt. Jenkins gets a heavy base and keeps Yamauchi’s head on the cage, finishing the round strong with strikes. 10-9 Jenkins.
R3: Yamauchi glances with a body kick and whiffs with a spinning kick. Jenkins secures another double leg and puts Yamauchi on his back early. Yamauchi elevates the hips of Jenkins but can’t sweep him. Yamauchi rolls into an armbar and looks to have caught Jenkins unaware. Jenkins, his right arm deep in the hold, takes a knee and worsens his position before quickly returning to the ground.
Jenkins works his way out of the armbar and lands a glancing elbow. Jenkins keeps firing moderate ground-and-pound but none of it lands clean and Yamauchi deflects the gist. Yamauchi angles for a triangle in the waning seconds and Jenkins power-bombs his way out of it. 10-10. I have the fight 29-27 for Yamauchi.
- Bubba Jenkins defeats Goiti Yamauchi by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-27)
Sirwan Kakai vs. Joe Taimanglo
R1: Taimanglo opens with a front-leg side kick and an outside low kick, switching stances frequently in the early exchanges. “Baby Joe” takes flight with a lead jump knee that at least partially lands to the body. Kakai stays patient in a crouched boxing stance, looking for counters. Kakai scores with a right cross counter, then glances with a monster overhand right.
Taimanglo steps into a short right jab and it knocks Kakai down for a millisecond. Kakai shoots and Taimanglo stuffs it, then snaps down the head from the front headlock. Taimanglo switches his grip to an anaconda choke, at first wrenching it from his knees and then going to the gator roll. Kakai’s in trouble and Taimanglo switches to the guillotine, pulling guard with the submission. Kakai pops his head out of danger and goes to work with short rights in Taimanglo’s guard. Taimanglo fights back to his feet but gets taken back down with an outside trip. 10-9Taimanglo.
R2: More rangy kicks in southpaw from Taimanglo in the second. They trade right hands in open space after an uneventful clinch exchange. Kakai lands a left hook as Taimanglo throws a lead uppercut. A knee-tap to looping left overhand medley from Taimanglo is blocked by Kakai, who’s coolly composed but perhaps a bit too complacent.
Kakai snaps Taimanglo’s head back with a jab. Kakai has a hesitant duck-under takedown attempt muffled by Taimanglo, who sneaks in a few knees to the body in a late clinch. 10-9 Taimanglo.
R3: Taimanglo, still switching stances, lands a body kick and then a short right after stuffing a takedown attempt. Outside low kick to the upper thigh lands for Taimanglo but Kakai answers identically. Kakai corners Taimanglo and gets deep on a double leg, hoisting his opponent off the canvas before dumping him emphatically. Taimanglo scampers to his feet and circles off the cage, separating with a right cross. Taimanglo lowers his level to deny another Kakai takedown attempt, again circling off the cage.
Taimanglo glances with a diagonal elbow but eats a few elbows to the temple when he transitions into a double leg. Kakai whizzers his way out of the double and lands a sharp counter in open space. Kakai keeps moving forward, securing a double leg briefly before Taimanglo pops back up and circles off the cage. A wide base and spike elbows to he head keep Kakai on his feet during a takedown attempt from Taimanglo. Clean jab lands for Taimanglo, who then looks for a counter takedown during a Kakai low kick. Kakai repels the takedown and chambers off a clean one-two. 10-9 Kakai. I have it 29-28 Taimanglo.
Joe Taimanglo defeats Sirwan Kakai by unanimous decision (29-28 x3)
