Check out the results and highlights from Bellator 173, including Liam McGeary’s main event finish of Brett McDermott.
Belfast, Northern Ireland was the setting for Bellator 173, as the main event saw Liam McGeary put a second round beating on Brett McDermott after they brawled it out in the first. Bellator featherweight prospect James Gallagher put on for the Belfast crowd by strangling Kirill Medvedovsky in the opening round of their co-main event baout.
Main Card:
Liam McGeary def. Brett McDermott by TKO (Doc Stoppage) at 1:06 of round 2: Catchweight (215 lbs)
McDermott wasted no time in getting into the face of McGeary as he dropped the former light heavyweight champion in the opening moments. McGeary recovered right away and returned to his feet to square up. McGeary dropped McDermott with a monstrous knee, before following him to the ground in pursuit of the finish. McDermott was able to survive and fend off multiple submission attempts, and even finished the opening round on top. The second stanza saw McGeary religiously land his jab for about a minute straight, before the referee halted the action in order for a doctor to take a look at McDermott. Based on the recommendation of the doctor, the referee called a stop to the fight, and Liam McGeary is back in the win column.

James Gallagher def. Kirill Medvedovsky by Submission (RNC) at 2:53 of round 1: Featherweight
Gallagher came out in the classic SBG Ireland stance as he backed up Medvedovsky to the cage. The Irishman used a flying knee to close the distance, where he quickly found the takedown. Gallagher transitioned to the back of Medvedovsky where he unleashed a few thunderous strikes before cinching up the Rear-Naked Choke. James Gallagher has moved to 6-0 and made the most of his in-cage interview by calling out fellow featherweight prospect A.J. McKee.
Iony Razafiarison def. Sinead Kavanagh by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-25): Catchweight (140 lbs)
Razafiarison came out pressuring her opponent with heavy leather, before a big bolo landed for Kavanagh. Razafiarison immediately recovered, stood back up to her feet, and shot right in to secure a takedown. After a referee stand-up, Razafiarison closed the distance and managed to trip Kavanagh up against the cage, and finish the opening round on top.
The second frame kicked off as Razafiarison threw a step in lead hook, followed by a silky transition into the clinch, where the takedown soon followed. Razafiarison spent a solid amount of time in top control as she chipped away at her Irish opposition with busy strikes.
The third round saw more of the same, as Razafiarison found top position, and racked up points with her strikes. Razafiarison remained busy enough with strikes and transitions, to where the referee saw no need to stand up the fight. Kavanagh had no answer for her opponent’s top pressure,
