The Bellator 237 main event was the setting where Fedor Emelianenko knocked out Quinton “Rampage” Jackson with a right hand in the first round.

This was a lopsided matchup. The much heavier, and much slower, Rampage didn’t offer up much in terms of offense. He spent most of the fight missing, and shelling up, while Fedor was landing his strikes without consequence. The end came when a thudding right hand connected to the face of Rampage, dropping him to the canvas. No followup strikes were necessary because Rampage was done for.

What was the highlight of the fight?

The highlight of the fight might have been the seminole blow that ended it all. Fedor’s right hand has put away many foes, and Rampage was no exception. On the other hand, the true highlight is when Fedor seemingly announced that this is likely his last fight and will retire from the sport on a win. Let’s hope that remains the case.

Where do these two go from here?

Fedor is widely loved and revered, but what better time for him to hang up the gloves? He has the chance to go out on a win, and in front of the Japanese crowd in Saitama where he rose to the status of legend. Fedor has always been an excellent representative of the sport of MMA, and a true embodiment of what it means to be a martial artist. He never talked smack and rose to glory through his fighting So where does he go from here? Anywhere other than an MMA competition is alright with me. Grappling events are gaining steam, so perhaps we’ll see him enter that arena against other aged-out veterans if his desire to compete is still burning. I’m totally fine if he retires to a private island and works on his tan while sipping piña coladas for the remainder of his days. I mean after all, he’s earned it.

Rampage looked horrible out there. His added padding did nothing but slow him down. This is the first time he has been knocked out since 2005, but let’s not forget that Chael Sonnen pieced him up on the feet just shy of two-years ago. Rampage has lost three of his last four fights, and is nearing the end of his rope. Who knows, maybe he’ll fight Sergei Kharitonov, Josh Barnett, or some other aged veteran. There’s plenty of journeymen out there that Scott Coker could feed to Jackson, but the thought of him losing to one of those guys is downright heartbreaking. Where does Rampage go from here? Well, if he wants to keep fighting, then the honest answer is on a diet.
