The blue corner is on deck for today’s matchup in our BE’s BADDEST Tournament Series to figure out what is the single Greatest MMA Fight Of All Time — that one to watch before the world ends. Today’s bout involves the #3 ranked Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes 2 going to war with the #6 seed Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard 3.
In yesterday’s tournament matchup, the #2 Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard 2 duked it out with #7 Paulo Costa vs. Yoel Romero. With 23 total votes, Edgar vs. Maynard 2 nearly doubled up on Costa vs. Romero, who received 12 votes. The Edgar/Maynard sequel now advances to face the #1 seed, Dan Henderson vs. Shogun Rua 1, in the next round.
For today’s fights, we are sticking with Edgar and Maynard, but the trilogy edition, and pitting it against Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes part two. Both of these tilts were title fights, with one of them being a five round war, and the other one involving a comeback and a fourth round finish.
Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes had their rematch at UFC 179 on October 25, 2014. This was top shelf talent going blow for blow for the UFC featherweight strap. Mendes had improved a lot since their initial meeting, but Aldo had achieved god-mode. Mendes landed some heavy leather, but Aldo was hitting just a little bit harder and landing the better shots. Aldo was also able to address most of the takedowns, not allowing Mendes to control him on the ground. At the end of a tough five-rounds, it was Aldo who retained his title and extended his winning streak to an impossible 18.
With their second fight being declared a draw, as well an all-time classic, an immediate Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard trilogy bout was in order. This time was at UFC 136 on October 8, 2011, ten months removed from their second encounter. It was just as exciting with the big momentum swing as their second meeting, but this one produced a finish. Maynard got off to another great start, just moments away from having the fight stopped in the first five-minutes. Edgar again escaped from the jaws of defeat and survived to see a second round. The champ began to turn the tide, building steam before ultimately sniffing out a fourth round TKO — retaining his bantamweight title and bringing their series to 1-1-1.
