UFC Vegas 29 went down last night (Sat., June 19 2021) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, which saw Chan Sung Jung dominate Dan Ige for five rounds (see it again here) in the main event of the evening. In the co-main event, Serghei Spivak defeated Aleksei Oleinik after 15 minutes of Heavyweight action.
Biggest Winner: Chan Sung Jung
“The Korean Zombie” put one of the best and most dominant performance of his career against Ige, showing off pretty much every aspect of his well-rounded arsenal. Ige did have a few bright moments, but it was all Jung, who showed great patience when it was needed and pounced when the opportunity presented itself. The win puts him back in the win column after losing to Brian Ortega in his last bout, which nearly prompted him to retire from the fight game. Instead, he is now in the thick of the Featherweight championship picture, especially with Max Holloway having to bow out of his bout against Yair Rodriguez.
Runner Up: Matt Brown
Coming into his fight against Dhiego Lima, Brown was in desperate need of a victory after dropping back-to-back losses at the hands of Miguel Baeza and Carlos Condit. A third straight loss would have likely lead to “The Immortal’s” release from the promotion or even another retirement. But Brown will live to fight another day after snapping his skid with an emphatic one-punch knockout victory over Lima, giving him his first win since Dec. 2019. It also secured him a nice $50,000 bonus.
Biggest Loser: Aleksei Olenik
Oleinik’s ship just keeps on taking water. The 43-year old Heavyweight suffered his third straight defeat after coming up short against Serghei Spivak. “The Boa Constrictor” hasn’t won’t a fight in over a year and three straight defeats just don’t look well on an aging veteran. Dana White and Co. have already let go of two struggling Heavyweights in the form of Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos, so the future doesn’t look too bright for Oleinik after his latest setback.
