UFC Austin went down last night (Sat., Dec. 2, 2023) live from inside Moody Center in Austin, Texas featuring a Lightweight showdown that saw Arman Tsarukyan obliterate Beneil Dariush in the very first minute of the fight thanks to wicked knee-punch combination that put him out cold (highlights). In the co-main event, Jalin Turner added to the night’s highlight reel of knockouts (which included this one and this one) after he turned Bobby Green’s lights out, also in the very first round (see it again here).

Biggest Winner: Arman Tsarukyan

Tsarukyan had a very interesting week in Austin. After getting into a couple of scuffles at the fighter hotel with Bobby Green, he had to compose himself in order to focus on the task at hand, a headlining bout against the No. 4 ranked fighter at 155 pounds in Beneil Dariush. And he did it in spades because he put on one of the best performances in his UFC career by turning Dariush’s lights out in the very first round. The win was his third straight and will undoubtedly put him into the Top 5 next week. Tsarukyan has looked like a man on a mission since losing to Mateusz Gamrot, and that mission is a shot at UFC gold. And judging by last night’s performance he has put everyone on notice.

Runner Up: Jalin Turner

Turner stepped up to the plate to take on Bobby Green after Dan Hooker suffered a injury that forced him out of the event. And “Tarantula” knocked it out of the park by scoring a devastating knockout win over “King” in the very first round. After clipping Green and rocking him, he proceeded to deliver some nasty ground-and-pound to put an end to the fight. Of course, referee Kerry Hatley took some shine from Turner’s win because everyone was talking about the dreadful stoppage. Nevertheless, Turner is back in the win column after suffering back-to-back defeats to the aforementioned Hooker and Mateusz Gamrot.

Honorable Mention: Sean Brady

After over a year on the sidelines recuperating from injury, Brady returned in style last night to thoroughly dominate Kelvin Gastelum in a Welterweight matchup. Brady eventually submitted Gastelum in the third and final round via kimura (highlights), putting him back in the win column after suffering the first loss of his career at the hands of Belal Muhammad on Oct. 2022. Now that he has his groove back, Brady can look ahead to a bigger matchup in his next outing inside the Octagon. He was also one of 10 fighters who earned a $50,000 post-fight bonus check.

Biggest Loser: Kerry Hatley

For the first-time ever, we aren’t going to put a fighter in this spot. Instead it is going to referee Kerry Hatley, who officiated the fight between Turner and Green. After Turner dropped Green, he proceeded to put on the finishing touches…and then some. Turner delivered one vicious blow after another, and the fight could have been stopped way sooner than it did. Instead, Hatley stood over both men and just watched “The Tarantula” land at least 12 unnecessary shots on Green until he put him clean out. We get that a referee’s job is tough; one minute your the hero for stopping a fight correctly, and the next you’re the heel for stopping too early or too late. But this one was dreadful because Green was clearly out and took so much unnecessary punishment.
