UFC Denver went down last night (Sat., July 13, 2024) inside Ball Arena in Denver CO., which features a women’s Flyweight main event that saw Rose Namajunas handle Tracy Cortez rather easily after five rounds of action to earn the clear-cut unanimous decision (recap here). In the co-headlining act, Muslim Salikhov narrowly defeated Santiago Ponzinibbio via split-decision in a Welterweight affair (recap here).
Biggest Winner:
Biggest Winner: Jean Silva
Silva agreed to take on Drew Dober on short notice after Dober’s original opponent, Mike Davis, bowed out of the fight. What made the decision to fill the void even more impressive was the fact that the up-and-coming Brazilian contender was coming off a win over Charles Jourdain just two weeks ago. And it turned out to be a great decision because he and Dober put on a great performance that ended after Silva busted his foe’s left eye open. Credit to Dober, though, he fought through seeing blood up until the referee said “No Mas.” Silva was on his “A” game, was aggressive and wasn’t afraid to go for it, clipping Dober with multiple spinning back-fists and elbows. Silva improves his win streak to 11 and moves to 3-0 inside the Octagon, proving that it it pays off more often than not to answer the door when opportunity knocks. Both men walked away with an extra $50,000 for their entertaining scrap.
Runner Up: Montel Jackson
Namajunas’ win over Cortez was dominant, but most expected that outcome since Cortez was coming in on two weeks notice and, if we’re being honest,” Thug Rose” is simply light years ahead of Cortez as far as overall MMA talent goes. That said, Montel Jackson gets this spot here after securing a blistering 18-second knockout win over Da’Mon Blackshear, dropping him with a clean shot before pouncing and putting on the finishing touches. Jackson barely broke a sweat, improved his win streak to five in a row, and took home a cool $50,000 in post-fight bonus cash, and improves his overall UFC record to 8-2. A great night indeed for “Quik,” who is quietly climbing the stacked Bantamweight division.
Biggest Loser(s): Mariya Agapova and Darrius Flowers
After making her debut in 2020, Agapova has failed to build up much momentum, going just 2-4 in her six fights with the promotion. To make matters worse, she has lost her last three fights, which includes last night’s defeat to Luana Santos, who choked her out in the very first round. That’ three straight submission losses for the Kazakhstani, who could find herself out of the promotion after her horrible losing streak. Coming into the event, Flowers made our list for the fighter who needed a win the most after dropping his first two fights with the promotion. Things only got worse for “Beast Mode” after he was submitted by Evan Elder, giving him his third straight loss in three fights under the UFC banner. That’s not what Dana White and Co. want to see, which means he is a prime candidate, like Agapova, to get his walking papers.
