UFC Tampa went down last night (Sat., Dec. 14, 2024) inside Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., which featured a Welterweight fight that saw Joaquin Buckley score an impressive technical knockout (TKO) win over Colby Covington, busting him up to the point of forcing a doctor’s stoppage (highlights here). In the co-main event, Cub Swanson turned Billy Quarantillo’s lights out with a devastating shot in the third round (see it again here).
Biggest Winner: Joaquin Buckley
Don’t look now, but the Welterweight division has a new threat as “New Mansa” secured his sixth straight win in the division since making the move up 17 months ago. That’s right, Buckley has won six fights in a year and a half, four via KO/TKO. A win over Covington is the biggest of his career, and one that will move him up the 170-pound ladder. Even if the doctor’s stoppage didn’t happen, it just felt like another TKO win the traditional way was around the corner.
Runner Up: Cub Swanson
Swanson turned back the hands of time and went back to his-head-hunting ways and secured a massive walk-off knockout win over Billy Quarantillo in the third round of their Featherweight scrap (see it again here). Now, all the longtime veteran needs to do is be a bit more consistent with the wins because he has alternated wins and losses in his last seven fights spanning four years. Nevertheless, the World Exteme Cagefighting (WEC) legend can enjoy the victory and the $50,000 post-fight bonus cash that comes with it. If this is the end for Swanson, he wont out on a very high note. The stuff of legends.
Biggest Loser: Colby Covington
Covington needed a win in the biggest way after sitting out for a year following his loss to former Welterweight champion, Leon Edwards. But things went from bad to worse for “Chaos,” who suffered a one-sided beat down at the hands of Buckley. Covington did show flashes of his old self in the beginning, but once Buckley started landing his powerful shots, it slowly started to fall apart for the former interim champion. With two straight defeats and having lost three of his last four, Covington now finds himself at a crossroads in his career, which will have him go back to the drawing board to ponder his fighting future.
Runner Up: Ottman Azaitar
Coming into the event, Azaitar was on a two-fight losing streak after starting his MMA career a perfect 13-0, which includes winning his first two fights inside the Octagon. But things only got worse for “The Bulldozer,” who suffered his third straight defeat after getting knocked out by a devastating punch from Michael Johnson. To make matters worse, all three of his defeats during his skid have come by way of strikes. There is no telling if he will be able to get another shot to make things right for himself inside the eight-sided cage or get his walking papers.
