UFC Vegas 93 went down last night (Sat., June 15, 2024) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, featuring a Flyweight main event fight that saw Tatsuro Taira defeat Alex Perez via second round technical knockout as a result of a knee injury (recap here). In the co-main event, Miles Johns defeated Douglas Silva de Andrade via unanimous decision.
Biggest Winner: Tatsuro Taira
Even though the fight ended as a result of an unfortunate knee injury, Taira looked great in victory, giving him the opportunity to perhaps move into the Top 15, all while putting the rest of the Flyweight division on notice. With the win, Taira improves to 16-0, including going 6-0 inside the Octagon. He will be getting a higher-ranked foe in his next outing, which will give him the chance to further enhance his stock with another win.
Runner Up: Westin Wilson
Wilson came into the event having lost his first two fights inside the Octagon via first round knockout, and another loss would have likely meant he would no longer be under contract with the promotion.
The pressure was on.
And Wilson answered the call, pulling off an impressive upset over Jeka Saragih by submitting him with a rare triangle armbar submission. With the win, Wilson saves himself from potentially getting cut and walks home with an extra $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus.
Biggest Loser: Alex Perez
Perez didn’t have a bad showing, but he gets this spot because in defeat he suffered major damage to his knee, which ultimately resulted in the stoppage. It is too soon to tell the extent of the injury, but it’s safe to say Perez will be out a while given how much pain he was in. The loss and injury sets Perez back a bit more at 125 pounds because he drops to 1-4 in his last five fights. Hopefully, Perez can bounce back sooner rather than later, but at this point, it’s safe to assume he will likely miss the rest of 2024.
