BJJ wizard Braulio Estima won’t fight MMA again

Don’t expect to watch Braulio Estima compete in MMA ever again.

Estima, a multiple time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion and ADCC weight and absolute winner, made his transition to MMA in 2012 with a first-round submission victory over Chris Holland at Titan FC 24.

After a successful debut, “Carcara” returned to the BJJ mats and became world champion twice, winning the IBJJF tournament in California in 2013 and the world professional tournament in Abu Dhabi this year, and he’s sticking with the grappling world.

“I got several (offers), but I forgot about (the idea of fighting MMA) again,” Estima told MMAFighting.com. “Now I’m just helping my friends in MMA and competing in BJJ.”

The grappling wizard made his transition to MMA at 32 years old, and he believes that it was too late to start a new career.

“I decided to continue the projects I have,” he said. “It took me so long to get here and I wasn’t comfortable with leaving all this for something that I wasn’t sure. Professionally speaking, MMA is full of surprises. It’s not that wonderful world that a lot of people think. Everybody thinks they will be a Georges St-Pierre one day, but it’s not like that.”

“It was a great experience,” he continued. “I learned a lot, but a career of a MMA fighter is really complicated. It was too late. You have to focus 120 percent if you really want something. It’s hard to do well in both. On the other hand, everything happened at the right time in jiu-jitsu.”

One of the reasons why Estima decided to leave MMA was the injuries.

“I opted for the family,” he said. “Seeing the current physical condition of many of my idols made me open my eyes about the quality of life. I can do jiu-jitsu and train really, really hard every day and be well for the rest of my life.”
