The UFC featherweight has spoken about his loss to Edson Barboza at UFC 262.
Shane Burgos is doing well after his stunning, yet bizarre knockout loss to Edson Barboza in the pay-per-view opener of UFC 262 last Saturday night.
The featherweight contenders engaged in a fun, back-and-forth affair that made it to the third round before a right hand from Barboza brought about the end of the fight. Burgos appeared to handle the punch well until he started to slowly recoil to the cage before hitting the canvas in what was a very delayed reaction.
Barboza followed up with a few more punches to Burgos, who was already out before the referee stopped the fight. It was a shocking scene to say the least, but Burgos has reassured fans and pundits that he is fine after the knockout.
In his first post-fight comments, Burgos took to Instagram to address the loss and reveal his intention of taking some time off before making his next appearance by the end of the year.
“Overwhelmed by all the love and support I’ve been getting,” wrote Burgos. “This sport can bring the highest highs of highs and the lowest of lows. Disappointed is an understatement for how I’m feeling but it is what it is, all I can do is learn and grow from it. Gonna take some time off to spend with my wife and daughters but excited to get back in there later in the year and show a better version of myself.
“It was an honor to share the cage with [Edson Barboza] it was his night and he has all my respect!,” Burgos continued. “Thank u [sic] to my team, family, friends and all the fans for the support. This is all part of God’s plans and I trust it. I will keep chasing greatness.”
Burgos is now on a career-first two-fight losing streak, but he has earned ‘Fight of the Night’ honors in both of those fights. He previously dropped an unanimous decision to Josh Emmett at UFC on ESPN: Blaydes vs. Volkov in June 2020.
