Demian Maia and Gilbert Burns faced each other in a Welterweight clash tonight (Sat., March 14, 2020) at UFC Fight Night 170, which took place inside Ginasio Nilson Nelson in Brasilia, Brazil.
Burns digs into the calf twice early in the round then rips a kick to the mid-section. Maia lands a left hand after backing Burns into the fence. Maia attempts to circle toward the back, but Burns dives into a leg lock situation. Burns uses that to scramble back to his feet. Maia stays attached and circles towards the back in the clinch. Maia gets a hook in and drags his foe down, but Burns defends well. Burns escapes out the back door before long. Burns lands a huge left hook that drops Maia badly. Burns wants the walk-off knockout, but the referee forces him to swarm and score a full finish.
It was really a brilliant performance from Burns, who denied Maia’s jiu-jitsu expertly and then capitalized with huge shots on the feet.
Result: Gilbert Burns defeats Demian Maia via knockout
