A new welterweight king will be crowned as The Trilogy comes to an end.
After two days of violence, Cage Warriors lays out the finale for their three-day series of events. And what exactly is on offer? A fair amount, and it’s good action with more of CW’s collection of outstanding talent.
Mason Jones (9-0) appeared to be destined for big things when he started winning impressively in his earlier Cage Warriors fights, but really put an exclamation point on that hype with his first round finish of Joe McColgan back in March for the then-vacant lightweight title. Now, he’s looking to be a dual champ as he fights for the currently vacant welterweight belt against Adam “The Love Doctor“ Proctor.
A careful striker with good use of range and a very clinical ground game, Proctor’s (12-1) been a problem on a seven-fight win streak. His lone professional loss was to submission specialist Aaron Khalid, who just put another victim to sleep this week. So not a bad loss. Proctor begun his current streak after that and that includes wins over Ashley Reece and and Nathan Jones. In a week full of great fights, this should be excellent.
Ireland’s Paul Hughes (5-0) has got to be one of the hottest prospects from the Emerald Isle, with his penchant for quick striking setups and aggressive submissions. An athlete that’s still growing and making improvements from fight to fight. He’ll be fighting to move up the featherweight ladder against Scotland’s Aidan Stephen, who is also fluent in the language of violence. Featherweight has long been one of Cage Warriors’ more competitive and action-packed division, and this could very well be fight of the night. Both are hungry young guns that could potentially be fighting for a title in the not-so-distant future.
Jordan Vucenic (5-1) doesn’t get paid by the hour, and puts on the pressure pretty quick on opponents early on. He’s going to have to keep his wits about him since his opponent Steve Aimable (14-7) is also very, very dangerous and has faced considerably more experienced opposition overall. This is another pair of featherweights that will battle it out to establish order in the division.
Finally, flyweights get a bit more shine with Sam Creasy (11-3) meeting France’s Nicolas Leblond (5-2). Anyone that’s read anything I’ve written knows I have a penchant for the ultra-low weight classes, and Cage Warriors is no exception. Creasey can crack, and he’s also got submission skills with good takedown defense. There’s a lot of potential for him to get back into title contention after his last fight, a heartbreaking loss to eventual champ Samir Faiddine with a win here.
But that has to come against Leblond, who makes his Cage Warriors debut after racking up three straight wins. He does spend a bit too much time on his back, but stays busy while standing and employs great submission defense while keeping a steady pace.
Cage Warriors 116 is divided into two segments with the prelims starting at 1:00pm, and the main card at 2:30pm EST, all streaming live and exclusively on UFC Fight Pass.
