Boxing fans, don’t get excited about Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin just yet. GGG’s promoters say there is no movement, plus a lawsuit for Canelo threatens to further derail the process.
The biggest fight in boxing today is Canelo vs. GGG, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to be seeing it any time soon.
Golovkin’s team has confirmed that they have not been contacted by Golden Boy Promotions or anyone on Canelo’s team about the fight, telling World Boxing News:
Nothing has been forthcoming from Golden Boy… We are still hopeful that the fight with Canelo can be made and are open to continuing the discussions as soon as Golden Boy are ready and willing to do so.
This comes less than a week after Canelo Alvarez vacated the WBC Middleweight title while releasing this public statement:
I instructed my team at Golden Boy Promotions to continue negotiating a fight with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and to finalize a deal as quickly as possible.
Canelo’s decision to vacate the WBC title certainly changed the negotiation process. After Canelo’s May 7 WBC Middleweight title defense against Amir Khan, the WBC declared interim champion Gennady Golovkin the mandatory challenger. Rather than take that fight, Canelo dropped the title, effectively both stopping the WBC’s immediate call for a fight, and removing the need for that fight to be at 160 pounds. Golovkin has since been named by the WBC as their official Middleweight champion.
Throughout the process, Canelo has made multiple statements that he “will fight GGG” but so far, that is not happening.
Further complicating matters is a lawsuit filed by Canelo’s former promoters All-Star Boxing against Canelo, Oscar De La Hoya, and Golden Boy Promotions. That lawsuit claims that Canelo was signed to an exclusive four year deal with All-Star Boxing in 2008, and that Golden Boy has been acting in violation of that agreement. This suit was first filed in 2010, but seems to be headed to a trial later this year. According to Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler, this legal issue will only add to the delay:
It seems that (Golden Boy) wants to get the trial behind them and then see where they go from there.
