The undisputed Super Middleweight championship is on the line when Canelo Alvarez and Jamie Munguia throw down tonight (Sat., May 4, 2024) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Canelo has fought and won three times since his upset loss to Dmitry Bivol, retaining his status as the best Super Middleweight alive. However, there have been some criticisms lately, some opinions that Canelo is starting to slow down as he forges forward into his 65th professional match. Munguia, meanwhile, is six years younger and is undefeated at 43-0. The WBC Silver Super Middleweight champion is riding real momentum into the biggest fight of his career, but Canelo is definitely a massive step up in competition from recent opposition.

Round One
Munguia begins on the front foot, showing his jab. Canelo’s guard is taking the brunt of the force, but Munguia’s jab is effective early in establishing his range. Alvarez’s early hooks are coming up short. In the final seconds, however, the two open up in combination, and both land.

Round Two
Munguia active early in the second with his jab, but Canelo answers with a nice left hook. Canelo is finding his way inside and scoring more often in this round. From the bell, there was a lot more standing and trading between the two champions, particularly towards the body. A stiff 1-2 connects upstairs for Canelo. The Super Middleweight king seems to have his timing down.

Round Three
Munguia starts the third with a couple good connection and tries to build with further combinations. Canelo sneaks a counter uppercut through the guard, and both are throwing heat. Munguia staying committed to the jab, and he gets him in the corner briefly. Canelo defending well behind the high guard, but he’s less active in this round. The third finishes with a big Munguia flurry, but also a Canelo counter hook.

Round Four
Munguia’s early aggression lead him into a couple clean Canelo lands, but he wore them well. Munguia walks through a few shots and keeps pressuring, confident in his chin. Too confident, as Canelo ripped him with right hands and uppercuts to send him to the floor! He bounced back to his feet quickly and kept working, but that was a statement exchange from Canelo!

Round Five
Munguia showing Canelo’s power a bit more respect after the knockdown. He’s still active, but that momentum shift really seems to have benefitted the veteran. He’s staying in the pocket and finding his moments, particularly to the body. He’s leading effectively as well. Munguia has to get back on the front foot, because Canelo really picked him apart this round.

Round Six
Massive left hook swing just misses for Canelo to start the sixth. Another left hook a moment later sends Munguia backwards. Munguia crashes forward with a 1-2-1 and clinches. A long combination from Munguia mostly hits the guard, but a nice cross does score afterward. Canelo sticks his jab a couple times. A closer round than the last one, but it feels like Canelo is landing the cleaner blows.

Round Seven
Munguia pressures early but is backed off by a hard right hand counter. The jab finds a home for Munguia, who has yet to really earn his opponent’s respect. Left hook to the body sneaks through for Canelo. Munuguia gets him on the ropes with a combination on the guard, but Canelo fires back and lands harder — the story of the fight so far, really. Two Canelo left hooks score in the closing exchanges of the round.

Round Eight
Munguia is looking to dig himself out of a deep hole, and to his credit, he’s throwing! He starts to find a bit of success stringing together long combinations, but Canelo’s guard absorbs the bulk of it. Canelo answers with some body rips. Canelo’s counters and power calm down the volume of Munguia briefly. He sticks some jabs, then Munguia lets loose a combination near the bell. Better round for Munguia, but it’s not enough.

Round Nine
Munguia pushes his way into the inside and attacks the body. Canelo dings him with an uppercut, but Munguia strings together a good combination that actually gets through the guard. Close distance standing and trading through the first half of the round! A lot of forehead-to-forehead exchanges. Maybe that’s better for the younger challenger? He’s getting through the guard a bit more. When Canelo does land, however, the punches are thudding.

Round Ten
Canelo lands hard with a right, pivots, and fires off another couple punches. Great angles in response to Munguia’s aggression. Munguia is showing absolutely no quit, firing combinations of hard punches and standing right in front of Canelo. Munguia is definitely feeling the body work of Canelo. Canelo’s uppercut is landing with good consistency. Heavy 1-2 finds a home for Canelo in the closing seconds of the round.

Round Eleven
Canelo sticks his opponent with a couple jabs. He shows the jab and instead scores a left hook moments later. A bit more clinching this round. Munguia is still pressing, but his volume has decreased a bit. The younger man finds some good body punches of his own, but he’s in desperate need of a knockout. There’s a small cut over Canelo’s eye heading into the final frame.

Round Twelve
Munguia charges forward and ultimately ends up eating a left hook counter. Munguia presses behind body shots, weaving his head and trying to come up with powerful swings. Canelo calms him down just a bit with body shots, and he also interrupts his combinations with a stabbing jab. The clock is ticking away from Munguia as Canelo cracks him with a heavy two-piece combination. There’s no doubt and no last-second upset: Canelo was the sharper man tonight.
