Canelo-GGG draw sinks sportsbooks with mass refunds to bitter bettors
I know a lot of folks were frustrated when Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin fought to a controversial draw last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, but perhaps none more than the bettor who dropped a $500k wager in favor of “GGG.”
He’ll be joining the rest of the frustrated bettors in search of a refund, as sportsbooks will be forced to give back money to those gamblers whose payouts were dependent on a winner.
“There were some long lines, with some of the customers happy to get their money back and others disappointed,” Frank Kunovic, director of specialty games at Caesars Palace, told ESPN. “They weren’t yelling at us, but I think they were frustrated like we were about the decision.”
“A lot of people got refunds,” Westgate SuperBook vice president Jay Kornegay told ESPN. “But thank God it wasn’t a Mayweather-McGregor draw. We’d be refunding for a week.”
What appeared to be a clear-cut decision in favor of Golovkin was instead a tie, a disappointing follow-up to the tenth-round finish Floyd Mayweather Jr. scored against Conor McGregor late last month.
