Coming up on Saturday May 6, HBO presents the next big boxing PPV when lineal Middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1; 34 KO) faces Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1; 32 KO) in a 164.5 pound Catchweight fight.

Canelo vs. Chavez is, much like last year’s Canelo vs. Amir Khan PPV, a kind of odd-duck match-up. After all, Canelo is the lineal Middleweight champion, though he is yet to defend that title against a top ranked Middleweight. Meanwhile, Chavez is a once hot prospect who has thawed considerably in recent years largely due to his out of the ring lifestyle. Chavez suffered a tough loss in 2015 to Andrzej Fonfara, but has bounced back with two straight wins since.

The real story here is the all-Mexico angle. Both Canelo and Chavez are representatives of the rich, proud tradition of professional boxing in Mexico (Chavez in no small part because of his legendary father). Pairing the two on Cinco de Mayo weekend, traditionally a hot date for boxing, just makes sense. Despite any misgivings about the fight, it has a high chance of being a big action fight, and is quite likely to do strong business.

For the card, HBO and Golden Boy Promotions are bringing in more name fighters than is typical for a boxing PPV making it worth tuning in before just the main event. Of particular interest is David Lemieux – if he wins big here (and Chavez does not) it likely sets up a fight with Canelo this fall. Check out the full card below.
