Donald Cerrone feels he has a chance against Khabib Nurmagomedov, especially when the fight goes to the mat.
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s dominant 28-0 run is deeply-rooted to his wrestling and grappling acumen. Every fighter knows “The Eagle’s” primary gameplan, yet none of his challengers have been able to stop it.
Seeing it from an outside perspective, 155-pound contender Donald Cerrone pointed out what he feels the root of the problem is.
“I didn’t see the fight [with Poirier]. I don’t know, I was on the lake,” Cerrone told media members during the UFC Vancouver open workouts on Wendesday (via MMA Fighting). “I figured [Khabib won], I heard the news.
“But I think people need to welcome Khabib to the ground. I’d let him. Come on in, let’s go.”
“How does Khabib do on his back?” he later asked. “What if I take Khabib down? Who knows? Sh-t.”
“Cowboy” will headline UFC Vancouver this weekend against Justin Gaethje. If he does get through this tough task, he may look to jump back to welterweight since he feels he no longer has opponents to face at 155 pounds.
“Back in the saddle again. After I beat Gaethje, there’s nobody else, that’s it, no one in front of me,” Cerrone said. “I do want to fight in December though, so I’ll probably have to take a 155 break, go to 170 and we’ll see.”
UFC Vancouver takes place this Saturday, September 14th, at the Rogers Arena.
