As the UFC works on a booking between Katlyn Chookagian and Cynthia Calvillo, Lauren Murphy has been left frustrated.
The UFC is close to finalizing a flyweight fight between Katlyn Chookagian and Cynthia Calvillo, but Lauren Murphy isn’t happy with the news.
ESPN first reported the potential new bout. The fight is expected to take place at UFC 255 on November 21st, the same night that Valentina Shevchenko will hope to defend her flyweight title against Jennifer Maia.
The news doesn’t sit well with fellow top contender Murphy. The 37-year-old has won her last four fights at 125 pounds, recently submitting Liliya Shakirova at UFC 254 last month. Murphy says she was already in talks with the UFC to fight Calvillo in December.
“I told Mick on Friday, I would fight Cynthia Dec 12. It was supposed to be a #1 contenders bout,” Murphy wrote on Twitter. He sent a contract. I asked to sleep on it because there’s some big stuff in it, shit way over my head. Tried to call him this AM. Woke up from a nap today and saw this.”
Chookagian (14-4) has already fought three times so far in 2020. “Blonde Fighter” was stopped by current champion Shevchenko and Jessica Andrade, but picked up a decision win against Antonina Shevchenko. Meanwhile Calvillo (9-1-1) won a decision against former title challenger Jessica Eye in June.
UFC 255 takes place on November 21st at the promotion’s APEX facility in Las Vegas. A flyweight title fight between Deveision Figueiredo and Alex Perez will headline the card.
