Just because Alexander Volkov disposed of Greg Hardy in the UFC Moscow co-main event last weekend on ESPN+ and is already setting his sights on the next big thing at 265 pounds, doesn’t mean he’s about to let Junior dos Santos off the hook.
“Cigano” was expected to headline the Nov. 9 show against “Drago” but an infection rendered him medically ineligible to compete. “The Prince of War” stepped in on super-short notice but the power-punching upstart was unable to handle his more experienced opponent.
“I returned to the title race,” Volkov said after the event (via MMA Junkie). “I want to be at the top. I will be the best. I want [to fight] as fast as possible. I have unfinished business with ‘JDS’ and Overeem. Both of them [are a] good choice.”
Volkov (31-7) was slotted to fight Alistair Overeem in the UFC St. Petersburg main event back in April; however, was forced to withdraw from the fight card. His replacement, Alexey Oleinik, crumbled under the might of “Demolition Man” in the very first round.
In order to make that bout come to fruition, Overeem must first get past the surging Jairzinho Rozenstruik, who replaced Walt Harris following the tragic disappearance of his step daughter. They’ll do the deed at the upcoming UFC on ESPN 7 event on Dec. 7.
