Claudia Gadelha not expected to be fined for late punch on Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Claudia Gadelha is not expected to be fined by the Arizona Boxing and MMA Commission for her late blow on Joanna Jedrzejczyk at Saturday’s UFC on FOX 13 event in Phoenix, executive director Matthew Valenzuela informed MMAFighting.com.

Gadelha popped Jedrzejczyk with a right hook seconds after the horn signaled the end of the pair’s strawweight contender fight, a sequence that reminded many of Paul Daley’s infamous sucker punch on Josh Koscheck. Valenzuela characterized the punch as a “heat of the moment” action and said that no representatives from the UFC or Jedrzejczyk’s camp have filed a grievance at this time.

UFC President Dana White echoed a similar sentiment at Saturday night’s post-fight press conference, divorcing Gadelha’s actions from Daley’s because of Gadelha’s immediate remorse following her late punch.

“The difference is this: when Daley did it to Koscheck, I was in there, and I went up to Daley because he was getting pulled around, and he didn’t care,” White said. “He didn’t give a s**t. He looked right at me and said he didn’t care. As soon as [Gadelha] did it to [Jedrzejczyk], she reached her hand out and she apologized to her. She said ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’ She apologized.

“Those two had a war. They’re in the heat of a battle. She landed a kick and then the bell rang, and then she hit her with a punch. And then she completely apologized for doing it. Totally different scenario.”

UFC on FOX 13 took place Dec. 13, 2014 at the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, AZ.

Jedrzejczyk went on to win a narrow split decision over Gadelha on the judges’ scorecards and will likely be the first challenger to take on inaugural UFC strawweight champion Carla Esparza.
