With the fight taking place three years ago, questions are raised as to why the news has only come to light now.
Over three years since the fight took place, CM Punk’s decision loss to Mike Jackson at UFC 225 has been overturned to a no contest after it was revealed Jackson tested positive for marijuana.
MMA Junkie learned the news through the Freedom of Information Act request, with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) also confirming the news. It means that Punk, who hasn’t competed in MMA since the loss, now has just one official defeat on his record instead of going 0-2.
Jackson tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive substance present in marijuana, and was suspended for three months following the positive test.
“The official result of a full contact martial arts bout can be changed to a ‘no contest’ as an outcome of an adverse post-bout disciplinary finding against a contestant,” an IDFPR officer told MMA Junkie. “As detailed in the consent order provided, Mr. Jackson tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol due to marijuana following the June 9, 2018 UFC event at the United Center in Chicago.”
Fighters who competed at the event were warned about the Illinois Commission’s zero-tolerance policy for marijuana, with only those who received a medical prescription being exempt from the rule.
The news also came shortly after the Nevada Athletic Commission changed their policies and will no longer discipline fighters for marijuana.
