His head coach at American Kickboxing Academy, Javier Mendez, confirmed to MMA Fighting that his back surgery was a success and that Velasquez should be back training after one month.
“He had successful surgery on Wednesday,” Mendez told Ariel Helwani. “It was a minor surgery so he was walking right away. Only thing he has to do is wait until the incision heals before he can start working out. (It’ll take) about one month or less for the cut to heal.”
Velasquez last fought at UFC 200, where he battered 6 ft 7 inch heavyweight Travis Browne at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Prior to that, the wrestling powerhouse lost his HW title to Werdum at UFC 188. Their rematch at UFC 207 was supposed to solidify the next challenger for Stipe Miocic, who now rules as the current champion.
Velasquez was once hailed as the next heavyweight great to succeed the legendary Fedor Emelianenko, but his MMA career has been plagued by injuries and the AKA representative has spent a considerable amount of time on the sidelines.
As unlikely as it is, perhaps Velasquez can return more rejuvenated than ever after completing the 8th surgery of his career.
