Colby Covington lambasts UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley, as he once again pushes for the next title shot.
Welterweight contender Colby Covington has been actively campaigning for a title shot against champion Tyron Woodley. It is apparently the only fight that he sees fit for him next.
In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Covington looked back on his achievements for 2017 and believes he would have easily ended the year as the UFC’s 170-pound champion.
“If it wasn’t for the fake champ Tyquil ducking me I’d already have a belt wrapped around my waist, but he’s too scared and he’s out here in Hollywood gossiping about the Kardashians, he’s not ready to come back and defend the welterweight title,” Covington said. “So, I can’t look back until I get my belt. I’ll look back on what’s been accomplished after I get my belt. But in the meantime, I’ve got my eyes on Tyquil Woodley.”
Covington is situated at the number three spot of the official welterweight rankings and is jockeying for the position to be the next title contender against Stephen Thompson and Rafael dos Anjos, who are ranked number one and two, respectively. If you ask Colby, the former lightweight champion should not even be in the conversation.
“RDA fought three fights at welterweight. Last year RDA was getting knocked out by a lightweight Eddie Alvarez and getting beat up by Tony Ferguson,” Covington said. “That’s never happened to me, no one’s ever beat me up in my career. That dude doesn’t deserve a shot at Tyron Woodley.”
“RDA’s not really deserving, I’m the next in line, I’m the bad guy, let’s do this, man, let’s sell this already. Tyron Woodley versus Colby Covington for the welterweight title.”
Covington (13-1, with seven wins by stoppage), is currently on a five-fight win streak. He last fought Demian Maia in October 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he won via unanimous decision.
