Colby Covington has long stated that he isn’t in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) to make friends, saying that he’d rather get cozy with his money and bank account — and women — than form bonds with other fighters.
In fact, even his one-time close friendship with his training partner at American Top Team (ATT), Jorge Masvidal, hasn’t been the same as of late. With both men fighting at Welterweight, their paths were destined to cross, with both going as far as saying they had no issues punching each other in the face.
While Colby was irate that UFC opted to offer “Gamebred” a title fight against Kamaru Usman after his own negotiations with the promotion stalled, “Chaos” says the issues between he and Jorge started long before.
“He’s the type of guy that when you are doing something for him, he will use you. As long as you are doing better than him and you are not helping him out anymore, then he doesn’t care about you,” he said during a recent interview on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.
“And that’s exactly what happened because when he got beat up be Demian Maia and I went in there and destroyed him (Maia) in his home country, that is when our relationship started to get a different. He started acting different toward me as a competitor,” said Colby.
“Now I’m making more money than him, banging hotter chicks than him and doing better in life than him. He’s just a jealous little bitch.”
According to Colby, Masvidal’s jealousy toward him intensified when he earned his world title fight against Rafael dos Anjos, saying that Jorge didn’t show up to help him get prepared come fight week since he had him down as one of his corner men.
But Colby didn’t stop bashing his fellow American Top Team (ATT) comrades, as he took aim at Dustin Poirier after “The Diamond” called him a sellout during the UFC 242 post-fight presser (see it here) for ridiculing Masvidal.
“I thought they were very distasteful. I’m not a sellout, I bought in and he tapped out. And that’s what happened,” said Colby about Dustin’s comments. To hear Covington tell it, Poirier is upset that “Chaos” picked Khabib Nurmagomedov to come out on top at UFC 242 — which he did.
“I had to give the people America’s pick of the week. I had to give my honest opinion. I thought this was land of the free and home of the brave, land of opportunity, freedom of speech. Sorry I can’t have an opinion. We don’t have the same opinion and I just obviously knew Khabib was the better fighter,” he said.
“He thought Robbie Lawler was a better fighter and he picked him to beat me. Did I get my feelings hurt? No, I went out there and beat him. Dustin needs to stop making excuses and trying to blame me for his loss. Sorry you suck and you’re not the best fighter in the world. There can only be one best in the world and I’m sorry, but I am that guy.”
Furthermore, Colby says Poirier’s tears during the presser was all an act.
“I don’t know why he’s acting like a childish little kid. He needs to get an sponsorship from Kleenex with that Emmy-award winning act at the press conference, crying, ‘Oh my dream…blah, blah blah.’
“Me and Dustin have not trained together in a long time and we haven’t been friends. Yeah he trains at the same team. I am thankful to this gym, Dan Lambert and everything he does for us, but everyone knows this is an individual sport. We are individual contractors, I am out here to get mine and not to make friends. I am here to make money.”
