Conor McGregor hires BJJ star ahead of UFC 202

Conor McGregor has brought in BJJ standout Dillon Danis to help him prepare for his UFC 202 rematch with Nate Diaz.

It has been an interesting few months for Conor McGregor. Firstly, he was choked out by Nate Diaz at UFC 196, then he was booked to an immediate rematch at UFC 200, before entering a dispute with the UFC and being pulled from the card. After weeks of deliberations, McGregor vs. Diaz 2 has finally been rebooked for UFC 202 and Conor McGregor has kicked off his preparations by bringing in a grappling phenom.

While Dillon Danis isn’t the biggest name in the world of grappling, he is one of the most technically sound young grapplers in the business. Danis, a black belt under the legendary Marcelo Garcia, has made waves in both the gi and no-gi world in recent years and holds an impressive submission win over Joe Lauzon.

In a statement to FloGrappling, Danis spoke of his excitement at the opportunity to train with McGregor:

“We’ve been in contact for a while and the time was just right. He’s one of my idols and you don’t pass up opportunities like this. He has one of the greatest minds and skillsets ever in the sport.”

The addition of Dillon Danis to team McGregor is certainly interesting. While Danis is no Kron Gracie, he adds a certain je ne sais quoi to McGregor’s preparations for his rematch with Nate Diaz.

Like McGregor, Danis is deep in training for an important outing; he is scheduled to compete in the Copa Podio Middleweight Grand Prix on July 9, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
