It turns out Conor McGregor wasn’t done making headlines this weekend after his UFC 189 victory over Chad Mendes.

In a surprise move, UFC president Dana White announced Sunday night that McGregor will be one of the coaches on the 22d season of The Ultimate Fighter.

The UFC interim featherweight champion will oversee a team of eight European lightweight fighters, who will square off against a team led by former WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber.

To answer the question that just immediately sprung into your mind: No, this will not interfere with plans for the featherweight title unification fight between Jose Aldo and McGregor. There will be no coaches fight at the end of the season between the duo, who engaged in a brief backstage altercation the cameras conveniently caught Friday before the UFC 189’s weigh-ins.

“They’re just coaching and mentoring, but the best decision was to get Conor to coach the Europeans,” White said during the TUF 21 Finale.

The season will premiere on Sept. 9 with a two-hour special on FOX Sports 1.
