Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier, has done just about everything you can do in a successful mixed martial arts (MMA) career across two very tough weight classes.

Everything, except defeat Jon Jones.

That’s why “DC” will ignore his own retirement timeline and take one more fight after his upcoming rematch against former 265-pound kingpin, Stipe Miocic, which is scheduled for the UFC 241 pay-per-view (PPV) event this August in Anaheim.

Paging Mr. Jones!

“It’s all I want,” Cormier, 40, told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani about a potential trilogy. “I think when I fight Jones, I feel most complete when I’m preparing for competition against that guy. If you want to get right competitively, you go back and get the one you lost. If I don’t, trust me, I can be fine. But I’m just fiercely competitive. So when I say if there is another fight after (Miocic), it would have to be that one.”

At what weight class, remains to be seen.

Cormier (22-1, 1 NC) went down on points during his first light heavyweight title fight back in early 2015. His 205-pound rematch ended in violent fashion, but Jones’ knockout win was overturned to a “no contest” after testing positive for Turinabol.

Since immortalized in the “picogram” fiasco.

None of this would even be possible had Brock Lesnar made his UFC return, as promised, but I think we can blame the new ESPN+ deal on that one. At least this way, Miocic can finally quit his grousing and “DC” can retire with some closure.

One way or the other.
