Daniel Cormier talks about his brief encounter with Jon Jones at Wednesday’s ESPY awards.
Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones were both in attendance at Wednesday’s ESPY awards and, as you can imagine, the two fighters weren’t exactly smiles and handshakes.
Speaking to TMZ Sports in a recent interview, ‘DC’ detailed his brief encounter with Jones and said there was no hand shake or conversation with his arch rival.
“No, we’re not friendly,” Cormier said when asked if he shook hands with Jones in the hotel.
Cormier, the reigning heavyweight champion, failed to usurp Jones of the light heavyweight title on two separate occasions at UFC 182 and UFC 214 but the latter result — originally a KO win for Jones — was overturned to a No Contest (NC) after ‘Bones’ tested positive for performance-enhancing substances (PEDs).
Cormier, who recently teased of a trilogy bout with Jones, said it was always his dream to become the first man to legitimately beat the pound-for-pound phenom.
“It was my dream twice (to beat Jones),” Cormier said.
Jones recently edged out a split decision win over Brazilian slugger Thiago Santos in the UFC 239 main event at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.
As for Cormier, the former Olympian is scheduled to defend his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 241. The highly anticipated pay-per-view takes place next month, August 17 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
