All signs point towards a trilogy fight between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier.
UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic has given an update on his eye injury, and outlined when he wants to get back in the octagon.
Miocic (19-3) won back his UFC heavyweight title in August of last year against Daniel Cormier at UFC 241. stopping ‘DC’ by fourth-round TKO. The 37-year-old Miocic had his six-fight winning streak snapped by Cormier the previous year, when he lost his heavyweight title by way of a first-round KO.
Miocic gave an update on the state of his eye injury that has been bothering him since his first fight with Cormier when he spoke to TMZ Sports.
“The eye’s really good actually. It’s really getting healed up,” Miocic said. “I’m getting better every day and getting back in the gym slowly.
“I still have some spots still there, but it’s not really messing with my vision so I’m happy about that.” (Transcription via BJ Penn.com)
Much like Miocic did after his loss to Cormier, the accomplished Olympic wrestler has been gunning for a rematch ever since his loss at UFC 244. With many of the other top ranked heavyweights like Francis Ngannou already having fights booked, it seems plausible Cormier will be next in line for Miocic.
“It’s looking like summer. A lot of these fights are already booked up, so probably summertime. It’s whatever the UFC wants. I’m not the matchmaker. I’ve always said, ‘If I’m the matchmaker then I wouldn’t be fighting.”
Cormier has since heard about the news regarding Miocic’s return. Hinting that the trilogy is close to happening between the two heavyweights, ‘DC’ thanked Miocic on Twitter.
