Jorge Masvidal may be the BMF champion, a recent UFC title challenger, a cover athlete on the EA UFC 4 video game, but can he also conquer cornhole?

Well no, not quite, but he did get to take on top cornhole champion Cody Henderson in a “grudge match” that was televised on ESPN 2 on Wednesday. Let me tell you that based on the pre-game staredown video, these two DO. NOT. LIKE. EACH. OTHERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Did you see Jorge’s son throw those leg kicks? Henderson wasn’t checking them at all. Punches to the thigh, too? 10-8 round to Team Masvidal. I’m sure the American Cornhole League is investigating this out of control staredown. Yes, Cody had his masked pulled over his face, but does that give him the right to two-hand shove Jorge like that? Super unnecessary.

Now to the match itself. For those unaware of how the game works, you get three points if you toss the bag through the cornhole, and one point if it lands on the board. After each round of cornhole play is over, whichever player or team wins the round gets the point differential within that round added to their tally. For example, if you win a round 9-2, then your score entering the next round is 7-0. First to 21 is the winner.

To make things harder on Henderson, Masvidal was given a 15-point head start, so with only five rounds of cornhole action, Henderson needed to win by big margins. He seemed confident that he’d prevail in just three rounds, and it was exactly what he did.

Henderson took the opening round 10-2, then the next one 9-2, and just like that the 15-point handicap was erased. In round three, Henderson had a 7-0 lead and Masvidal needed a three-pointer on his final toss to avoid a loss. The bag landed on the board but skidded off, confirming Henderson’s victory in a sporting moment that will not soon be forgotten.

“I’m going to keep practicing,” Masvidal said in the post-match interview. “I started playing maybe like three years ago at a barbecue and I loved it. It’s not something I get to do often but whenever it’s around, I just play it. You couldn’t tell it by tonight.”

Masvidal is a month removed from his unanimous decision loss to Kamaru Usman at UFC 251. “Gamebred” accepted the fight on short notice after Gilbert Burns tested positive for COVID-19. As far as when he’ll return to the cage, he has his sights set on November or December, but no opponent was specified.
