Chan Sung Jung, the Korean Zombie’s military service ends in 2016, and it sounds like he’s got a UFC return on his mind, maybe even this year.

Once upon a time, a very long time ago, there was a land called the WEC. And in this land lived a man. But he was not just an ordinary man. No, far from it. He was a man of action. His name was Chan Sung Jung.

Of course, Chan Sung Jung made it to the UFC as well, fighting four times for the larger Zuffa platform and making his way all the way to a title fight against former divisional kingpin Jose Aldo. Chan Sung lost to Aldo, dislocating his shoulder in the process. He hasn’t returned to the cage since.

In part, continuing problems with his shoulder kept him out of a planned fight with Akira Corassani planned for late 2014. But mostly, he’s been tied up with his mandatory two years of military service for the South Korean government.

Chan Sung started his military training on October 20th, 2014, and now, with the end date approaching in the not too too distant future, MMAFighting has learned that the former UFC title contender is looking forward to resuming his MMA career, hopefully in late 2016 or early 2017, soon after his exit from military service, and maybe even on a potential return trip to his home country by the promotion.

The featherweight division has changed a ton since Chan Sung last fought there and it could change a lot more still, in the next six months or so, but it’s hard not to look forward to the return of the Korean Zombie.
