Colby Covington takes credit for Jorge Masvidal’s highlight reel knockout win over Ben Askren at UFC 239.
Jorge Masvidal accomplished quite a feat on Saturday night at UFC 239 when he knocked out Ben Askren with a flying knee in just five seconds of action. It is a win that his long-time teammate Colby Covington feels responsible for.
“I well-prepared him for this moment. Without him training with me all of these years, he wouldn’t have gotten that win,” Covington told MMA Junkie.
Of course, “Chaos” threw some shade at Askren, whom he’d been beefing with for a while now.
“He’s now 0-2 in the UFC with two first-round knockout losses,” Covington said of Askren. “He really needs to go back to Asia with all the other inferior products. But let’s be honest: CM Punk has spent more time in the UFC Octagon and has two less KO losses than Askren.
“We all found out that Askren didn’t belong,” he added. “He’s overrated, which I knew. I’ve been saying that the whole time. He’s been buying clicks. He’s been buying followers. But let me tell you one thing: You can’t buy octagon wins.”
Masvidal’s win elevates him further in the welterweight division, and likely positions himself next in line for a title shot. It also sets up a potential fight against Covington down the line.
Colby, however, isn’t too worried about fighting his friend, if it means capturing UFC gold for himself.
“We knew that our paths were going to cross,” he said of Masvidal. “We knew that he was a little too big for lightweight, and he was going to have to come to welterweight. We just said, hey man, it’s just business. There’s no hard feelings. It’s nothing personal. It’s just we both want that championship pay check.
“So we’ll cross that bridge when it comes, and now we’re closer than ever to that bridge being crossed. It’s not a big deal. It’s what we love to do. When we fight, it will just be purely business. We’ll finish our business, and we’ll go back to being best friends the next day.”
Masvidal (34-13, with 17 wins by stoppage) now holds the record for the fastest knockout in the UFC, beating Duane Ludwig by just one second.
