“I think that looks like a guy (Kamaru Usman) really primed to get knocked out in his next fight, and I want to be the one to deliver it”.
Kamaru Usman put on the performance of his career with a third-round TKO of Gilbert Burns in the UFC 258 main event to retain his welterweight title but, as predictable as ever, Colby Covington could only focus on the negatives.
Covington claimed Usman looked ‘chinny’ against Burns who is essentially an ‘oversized midget’, according to ‘Chaos’, and that ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ is ‘primed to get knocked out’ in his next fight.
“I think that looks like a guy (Kamaru Usman) really primed to get knocked out his next fight, and I want to be the one to deliver it,” Covington told Submission Radio in a recent interview (h/t Ross Markey of Low Kick MMA). “He looks a little chinny. Dilbert (Gilbert Burns), he’s an oversized midget, man, he’s a 155-er getting knocked out by 155-ers. The guy’s nothing, and that guy came out and dropped you and almost finished you in the first round? You got lucky to get out of that, he fell on his back and just sat there for five minutes and let you recover. Besides that, I didn’t see anything special. I see a guy that’s gotten worse. He changed camps and he looks like a different fighter in the worst way. He looks like he’s declined in his progression. So, he looks like a guy I’m ready to expose to the world, and I want to show them Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington 2.0.”
Usman was rocked and hurt badly by Burns in the opening seconds of the first round but showed tremendous resilience by turning the tables in the second round before finishing ‘Durinho’ in the third.
Covington, who reportedly suffered a broken jaw in his fifth-round TKO defeat to Usman at UFC 245, is currently awaiting his next opponent following a late stoppage victory over Tyron Woodley at UFC Vegas 11.
The former interim welterweight champ is in the running as a potential replacement to fight Leon Edwards following Khamzat Chimaev’s withdrawal from UFC Fight Night 187 on March 13.
