It looks like Diego Sanchez’s wish to take part in a fight against a legend in the final mixed martial arts (MMA) bout of his career has been granted. According to MMA Fighting, Sanchez is in talks to take on Donald Cerrone in a Welterweight fight at an upcoming event on May 8, 2021.

The two spent years climbing the UFC ranks side-by-side, helping one another along the way during their days at Jackson-Wink MMA. Over time, however, each man went his own way, leaving the famed camp to train elsewhere.

“Cowboy” has had a rough stretch as of late, losing four straight before fighting to a majority draw against Niko Price in his last outing last September. The fight was eventually overturned to a no contest (NC) after Price failed a post-fight drug test. Cerrone hasn’t tasted victory since May of 2019.

Sanchez, meanwhile, was last seen losing to Jake Matthews at UFC 253 last September on “Fight Island,” his second loss in three fights. Afterward, “The Nightmare” revealed that he would fight once more before calling it a career, going as far as challenging Conor McGregor. Much to everyone’s surprise, “Notorious” accepted the challenge, though UFC President Dana White wasn’t on board.

The fight is interesting on many fronts because not only will it pit two former friends and training partners against one another, but we get to see two of the most seasoned an exciting UFC vets throw down against one another. All told, the two men have combined to fight 68 times inside the Octagon.
