California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) is continuing to lead the way on the weight-cutting front, going after those mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters who continue to game the system.
Or those who simply can’t make the weight due to a lack of professionalism.
In addition to the standard fine of 20 percent, taken from a fighter’s “show” money, CSAC will now penalize the win bonus, as well. That means another 20 percent —payable directly to the opponent — for any fighter coming in heavy.
MMA Fighting brought word of the new policy on Wednesday.
If a fighter makes $20,000 to show and $20,000 to win, he or she would get dinged $4,000 right off the top, split equally between the commission and the opponent. That would be followed by another $4,000 (assuming the offending fighter wins) payable directly to the loser.
Expecting to make $20,000 and leaving with $12,000 can be catastrophic for a combatant trying to pay for training camp expenses and of course, personal expenses like rent or mortgage.
In addition to the new penalty, CSAC is aggressively pursuing stricter enforcement on extreme weight cutting — similar to what USADA is doing with drug testing — featuring a bevy of new changes expected to be revealed later this year.
Stay tuned.
