The battle to be Max Holloway’s first official title defense after “Blessed” knocked off Jose Aldo from the top of the Featherweight mountain at UFC 212 (see it again here) is officially on.
In one lane, you have former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar lobbying for his third crack at winning 145-pound gold, all while dismissing his closest competitor, Cub Swanson.
Cub, meanwhile, is making his own case due to the fact that he’s won four straight and he has yet to vie for a UFC belt. Furthermore, he also dismissed Edgar’s case, saying that he’s already had plenty of chances to win UFC gold, only to come up short time and time … and time again.
He broke it all down to MMA Junkie Radio:
“The reason why I was going to get it over him either way was because Frankie has fought for the title a bunch of times. And when you fight for the title a bunch of times and you don’t win, it’s pretty hard to sell that. Taking nothing away from him, I respect the guy, I think he’s an amazing fighter and he has a win over me, but since then I have been on a tear. And the fact is he is 0-4 in his last four title fights…and the fact that you can get that many title fights is crazy. Like I said, I’m just looking for one. I’ve never had the opportunity and I’ve been promised multiple times and had it taken away from me. And I’ve had to rebuild, get better. For 13 years I’ve been on the grind trying to be the best version of myself and I have never been better than right now. All I’m asking for is an opportunity.”
Because when you lose 4 straight title fights. It’s ridiculous to think you get a 5th https://t.co/sMSgEpTn4J

Indeed, after coughing up his 155-pound strap to Ben Henderson way back at UFC 144, “The Answer” came up short in his attempt to reclaim the strap in the rematch. Six months after that loss, Edgar was inexplicably given an immediate shot at winning the featherweight title in his first-ever fight at 145-pounds against Jose Aldo. Edgar came up short against Junior, only to do the same three years later at UFC 200 for the interim strap.
So, there’s that.
Furthermore, after admittedly falling into gatekeeper status, Cub says he shed that label by taking out everyone UFC put in front of him, including rising stars such as Doo Ho Choi.
What say you, Maniacs, both Edgar and Swanson have made very good points, so who are you siding with? Or should they just rematch to settle the debate once and for all?
