Dana White hopes to bring UFC to Maine
The UFC has held 185 events in the United States, but they have never been to Maine. That could change in the near future.
According to a recent report in the Lewiston Sun Journal, UFC president Dana White is “working on” bringing a UFC card to Maine.
“The arena is new, it’s all redone,” White said. “The [Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway Bangor] is there now, and I’m doing everything in my power to try to bring the UFC here.
“I think it would be really big for the city to bring the UFC here. Obviously people fly in from all over the world for UFC events, plus it would be on television all over the world so it would be big for the city if I could pull it off.”
That arena is the new 8,000-seat Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, ME, which is scheduled to open on Sept. 10, 2013. White was given a hard-hat tour of the arena last year while under construction and walked away impressed with the facility.
White also has deep roots in the area. He graduated from Eastern Maine’s Herman High School in 1987, and he currently has a home in Levant, ME. In 2011, he donated $100,000 to Hermon High School for athletic facility upgrades and to help fund the start of the school’s football program.
“If I can even remotely come close to pulling this thing off, I will do it,” White said.
White added that talks of bringing an event to Maine are only in the preliminary stages.
Maine legalized MMA in 2009, and since then several promotions, including Bellator earlier this year, have held events in the state.
The UFC returns to New England on Aug. 17 for its first show on the new FOX Sports 1 channel, to be held at Boston’s TD Garden.
