The UFC president has no idea what McGregor is planning to do with his boxing license.
Consider Dana White as baffled as the rest of us when it comes to Conor McGregor’s California state boxing license.
McGregor acquired the license on Wednesday and many began to speculate about a potential boxing superfight with Floyd Mayweather. The two mega athletes have traded verbal barbs for the past few months but Mayweather shot down the idea after ‘The Notorious’s’ victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.
McGregor, a two-weight UFC world champion (featherweight and lightweight), said the sky is the limit for his boxing potential but White was quick to remind him that he is under contract with the UFC.
“I have no idea what Conor is doing,” White told Yahoo Sports. “Conor’s Conor. He does his thing. But he’s under contract to me. Who knows with this guy? I just let Conor be Conor. And the other thing is, it’s fun to talk about this (Mayweather) fight and what might happen, but what commission would let that fight happen? Really, think about that.”
Mayweather, who announced his retirement after beating Andre Berto last year, is 49-0 as a professional boxer and is widely considered one of the greatest of all time. McGregor, who now rules as the UFC lightweight champion, has a boxing pedigree but has yet to make his debut in the ring.
McGregor is likely using his newly-obtained boxing license as a negotiating tactic, as he demanded part-ownership of the UFC last month and said he wouldn’t return unless he had a stake in the promotion.
