Contrary to previous reports, Dana White has confirmed that the fight between Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone will not be rescheduled to UFC 214.
One of the most anticipated matchups of 2016 was the supposed welterweight fight between Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone. Originally scheduled for UFC 205 last November, the bout was scrapped when Lawler, for unspecified reasons, was unable to compete.
The long-overdue fight has then been rescheduled for UFC 213 on July 8th. But this time, it was Cerrone who pulled out of the fight, and on Wednesday, it was revealed that it was due to a staph infection that required for him to be on an IV for seven days.
Initial reports have claimed that the fight will be rescheduled for a second time at UFC 214 on July 29th in Anaheim, headlined by the grudge rematch between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones. But according to UFC president Dana White, that will not be happening, as well.
“No, it won’t be in Anaheim,” White told MMAJunkie.
White recognized Cerrone’s toughness and willingness to compete, but his reason for opposing such an early return is actually because of injuries that were not previously disclosed by “Cowboy” in his announcement via Instagram.
“Here’s the deal. ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone is a stud. He’s too tough for his own good. He absolutely wanted to fight. The kid’s got a pulled groin; he’s got a bruise from his knee to the inside of his groin. And his other knee is blowing up; he’s got staph infection,” White said.
“Could he come out and fight? Probably. Should he come out and fight Robbie Lawler with a pulled groin? No, he shouldn’t. We’re going to get him healthy and remake the fight.”
The new rescheduled date has yet to be revealed, but for now, fans will just have to wait it out. Again.
