Former NFL football star Herschel Walker (1-0) was set for his second professional fight earlier this month but a cut during training forced him off the card. It turns out that undefeated Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier (6-0) was the one that accidentally cut him.
Cormier who is preparing to take on Devin Cole in the co-main event of the next Strikeforce Challengers event in January, spoke about the incident with Walker and what fans can expect to see when he steps back into the cage.
The situation was really bad (with Walker). He just really wants to fight. We were actually just grappling. He was sucking my knee down, and I posted my knee on the wall. His face just went into my knee. It was a freak thing. We weren’t even grappling hard. You would think it would happen during sparring if it was going to happen, but it was just from some grappling on the ground. He didn’t even know he was cut…he’s a tough guy. Herschel still wanted to fight. But it’s looking like he’s going to be fighting pretty soon, regardless, so that’s good…
They’re (the fans) going to see an improved fighter. I’m not the same guy that fought on Challengers in September last year. My timing’s getting better, and I’m improving in all facets of the game. This is a big card for SF and SHOWTIME®, with it being a free preview weekend, which means more viewers. I’m excited to be on this card and help headline it with Tarec [Saffiedine] and Tyron [Woodley]. It should be awesome!
