Daniel Cormier has been given back his UFC light heavyweight title

Following the CSAC’s decision to overturn Jon Jones’ win over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, Cormier is once again the 205 pound champ.

Daniel Cormier is your new UFC light heavyweight champion.

Or is he just the old UFC light heavyweight champion again? We’re not sure exactly sure how the history books will read on this ridiculous situation, which saw Jon Jones knock Cormier loopy at UFC 214 only to test positive for turinabol shortly after. As far as the California State Athletic Commission is concerned, Jones’ win became a No Contest earlier today. Soon after, the UFC informed Cormier that he’s back to being the champ again.

“If it’s a no contest, then the fight didn’t happen,” Cormier told MMA Fighting. “[Dana White] said ‘If one of you guys would have missed weight, he would have won the fight, but you still would have kept the belt. Because of that, the championship is getting returned to you.’ The fight is a no contest. If he cheated, he could not have fought and cheated and still won the fight. Once again, I’m the UFC champion.”

“He disqualified himself for taking a steroid before the fight, so it didn’t happen,” Cormier continued. “So now I get the belt back, which is the right thing to do. And I’m not only saying that because it’s me. It’s the right thing to do. You don’t cheat the sport, you don’t cheat the fans, you don’t cheat me. You have all the physical advantages, sir. You’re 30 years old, you’re 6-4, you’ve got an 85-inch reach. I’m 38 years old. I would love to take stuff and not have to wake up every morning and walk down my stairs sideways.”

AS for Jones, he still has the opportunity to go through USADA arbitration following the confirmation that his ‘B’ sample from fight night also tested positive for steroids. He’ll also end up in front of the CSAC, who will also assign him a fine and suspension for his latest drug infraction.

Jones currently holds a record for being only UFC champion to ever be stripped of two titles — the first over his hit and run incident and the second an interim belt that was taken following his UFC 200 drug test failure. Even though this ‘No Contest’ from UFC 214 means he never technically won the belt back and can’t be stripped a third time, I think we can all agree he definitely deserves recognition for his feat none the less.
