Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) made history last night (Sat., Oct. 6, 2018) with the UFC 229 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which took place inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and featured the lightweight title fight between Conor Mcgregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Unfortunately for the “Notorious” fans in attendance, the power-punching Irishman was no match for the Dagestani “Eagle,” succumbing to a fourth-round submission that under normal circumstances, would have ended the night.
But there was nothing about UFC 229 that was normal.
That includes the post-fight brawl that erupted when Nurmagomedov jumped the cage and went after Dillon Danis, the outspoken jiu-jitsu coach who talked a bunch of shit before the fight. All hell broke loose in the arena and both fighters were escorted to their respective locker rooms.
So basically we had a replay of the Brooklyn bus attack last April, only Khabib used himself as the flying dolly. Then some shitbag from his team snuck into the Octagon to sucker punch McGregor and yeah, it was one of those moments that reminds us why “The Empire State” resisted legislation.
Anyway, McGregor looked rusty during his first mixed martial arts (MMA) fight in nearly two years, which I guess was to be expected. Nurmagomedov managed to drop him in the second stanza and consistently used his grappling to make this fight … not close.
No telling what’s next for either fighter. It would make sense to have Tony Ferguson — who toppled Anthony Pettis in the UFC 229 co-main event — move on to fight Nurmagomedov, but we don’t yet know what disciplinary action will be taken in light of last night’s brawl
Stay tuned.
