Gina Carano’s recent appearance on an upcoming Discovery series may not be aired.
In February Gina Carano was fired from her plum job as Cara Dune in the hit Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian. Her canning came after months of controversial social media activity, which included one post that compared being criticized for political views in the modern United States to the genocide of Jewish people in Nazi-era Germany.
In announcing her firing Lucasfilm, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, said “there are no plans” for her to be future employed with the company. Lucasfilm’s statement also called Carano’s behaviour on social media “abhorrent and unacceptable.”
According to We Got This Covered Carano’s erasure from the Star Wars franchise includes the halting of production on Funko Pop! and action figures that bear her likeness. Also according to that outlet, Carano’s appearance in other Disney-owned ventures appears to be under threat.
Last year Carano filmed an episode of Running wild with Bear Grylls for the Disney-owned Discovery Channel. However, when an episode list for the forthcoming season was released there was no episode listed with Carano’s name on it.
Neither Disney nor Discovery have publicly commented about whether or not Carano’s appearance on the show will ever be aired.
Before transitioning to the world of acting Carano was the face of women’s mixed martial arts during the 2000s. After wins over Julie Kedzie and Tonya Evinger in the Elite XC promotion Carano signed with Strikeforce.
Her first bout with Scott Coker’s promotion was for the inaugural Strikeforce women’s featherweight title opposite Cris Cyborg. The fight, which saw Carano brutally TKO’d by the future UFC champion, was one of the most seen MMA fights of the era.
After that loss Carano retired from the sport. Her first foray into acting featured mostly direct-to-video productions. In 2011 she starred in the Steven Soderbergh action flick Haywire. That was followed by appearances in Fast & Furious 6 and Deadpool.
She landed her role with the The Mandalorian in 2019. Since being fired from that job Carano announced that she would appear in films produced by former conservative pundit Ben Shapiro.
